About us
Who is Yachtsun Charter Zanzibar?
We are a yacht charter company based in Zanzibar, operated by Yachtsun Limited. Before Zanzibar, our team spent years chartering yachts in the Caribbean, Croatia and the Seychelles. Today we are the largest yacht fleet operator in Zanzibar, with four catamarans, our own base, our own technical service and a local crew. Meet the team →
Where is your base?
Our charters start at Azam Marina, next to Verde Hotel, about 10 km from Zanzibar airport. The marina has water, electricity and 24/7 security. Open in Google Maps
What can I book with you?
Three ways to sail: a week charter of a whole catamaran (crewed, or bareboat with a local deckhand), a cabin cruise where you book a private cabin on a crewed catamaran, or a private day trip. We can also add a safari, diving or excursions on the island.
Who do I contact for what?
Our charter office looks after week charters, cabin cruises, safari and excursions on the island (WhatsApp +48 698 101 198). Our day trips team looks after day trips (WhatsApp +255 673 458 837). Offers, bookings and documents: office@yachtsuncharter.com.
Where can I read reviews from your guests?
Read honest reviews from our guests on Google and Tripadvisor. Sailed with us? We would love to hear how it was.
Booking & payments
How do I book?
It takes three steps: 1. choose your yacht or trip; 2. contact us and we confirm availability; 3. confirm your booking with a deposit, and we take care of the rest. We usually reply within a few hours.
What should I tell you to get an offer quickly?
Your dates, the number of guests (including children and their ages), the type of trip (week charter, cabin cruise or day trip) and any wishes: crewed or bareboat with a local deckhand, chef or full board, diving, safari, dietary needs. We prepare an offer tailored to your dates, group and budget.
Where can I find your prices?
Prices depend on the yacht, the season and the options you choose. You will find the current rates on each yacht page, on Day trips and on Cabin cruises, or just ask us for an offer.
How do I secure my booking, and when do I pay the balance?
Week charters and cabin cruises: a first instalment of 50% is due within 7 days of the Booking Confirmation, together with the signed contract, and the remaining 50% no later than 30 days before the start. If you book less than 30 days before the start, the full amount is due at booking. Extras you add on site are paid on site. Day trips: a deposit of USD 400 or TZS 1,000,000 secures your booking, and the balance is paid before the trip starts. The full payment terms are in our Charter Terms & Conditions.
Which payment methods do you accept?
Bank transfer, cash, card payment on our card terminal in Zanzibar, or PayPal (which also lets you pay by card online). Card and PayPal payments carry a 3% fee. Day trips: we prefer cash or mobile money (M-Pesa) in USD, TZS or EUR; a bank transfer must reach us before the trip, and card or PayPal is possible on request only, as there is no card terminal on board.
In which currency are prices quoted?
Week charters and cabin cruises are quoted in euro (EUR), day trips in US dollars (USD).
Do you offer discounts?
Yes. Early booking: 5% when you book more than 180 days ahead, 10% more than 360 days ahead and 12% more than 520 days ahead. We also offer discounts for charters of two weeks or longer, for group bookings of two or more yachts, and for returning guests. Ask us which ones apply to your dates.
Is there a discount if I sail with you again?
Yes. Once you have sailed with us on a private charter, you are part of the Yachtsun family: returning guests get a lifetime discount on their next charters.
What is the cancellation policy? Can I change my dates?
Cancellations are governed by our Charter Terms & Conditions. As a rule, dates cannot be changed once your booking is confirmed. If your plans change, contact us as early as possible: we consider every case individually and try to accommodate you wherever we can. We strongly recommend trip cancellation insurance.
Crewed or bareboat
Can I charter a yacht bareboat and skipper it myself?
Yes – as a bareboat charter with a local deckhand (we call it assisted bareboat). You are the skipper of your holiday, and one of our deckhands sails with you. Pure bareboat without any crew member is not possible in Zanzibar, for safety reasons.
Why must a deckhand sail with every yacht?
Zanzibar is not the Mediterranean. Charts here are not very precise, some depths are marked incorrectly and the tides are high, which can create dangerous situations even for very experienced sailors. Our deckhands know these waters, the best anchorages, the tides and the local fishermen's customs. Experienced sailors have told us after their charter that the deckhand was essential for a safe cruise.
What does the deckhand do on board?
He helps with dropping the anchor, setting the sails and driving the dinghy, keeps the common areas tidy, acts as your local guide and stays on board when the whole group goes ashore. He can also help you find and buy fresh produce along the way.
Where does the deckhand sleep?
Usually in the crew cabin in the bow. All berths are for our guests first: if your group needs every bed, the deckhand sleeps in the saloon or another spot on board where he won't disturb you.
What licence do I need to skipper the yacht?
You need a valid qualification that allows you to skipper a yacht of this size at sea, plus a VHF radio certificate (SRC or LRC). We assess every licence individually. For everyone's safety, we reserve the right to require a skipper if, at check-in, we judge that the skipper's skills or experience are not sufficient for a safe charter.
What is a crewed charter?
Add one of our professional skippers and he sails, navigates and anchors for you, so you can simply relax. With our skipper, the deckhand sails with you free of charge. Add a chef or our Full Board option for a completely carefree holiday.
I have never sailed before. Can I still charter a yacht?
Of course. Choose a crewed charter: a professional skipper and his deckhand take you to the best beaches and to places hotel guests never reach. Your skipper suggests the best route and you choose where to go; only in bad weather does the skipper make the call for your safety. Our chef can cook all your meals. No sailing experience is needed.
Can I hire a chef without full board?
Yes. You can hire a cook who prepares your meals on board; the cost of the food is not included, but he knows where to buy good ingredients at fair prices. Or choose Full Board, where we take care of everything.
Who are your skippers and crew?
A permanent local crew who know these waters better than any chart. Each catamaran has its own two-person crew. Meet our skippers, chefs and deckhands on About us.
Can I ask for a specific skipper or chef?
Yes, tell us when you book. We note every request and do our best to plan the crew around it.
Are tips for the crew included?
Tips are voluntary and not included in the price. Every tip goes in full to the crew.
Week charters
What are the check-in and check-out times?
Check-in is from 5 pm and check-out is by 9 am, at Azam Marina next to Verde Hotel. An early check-in or late check-out (1 pm) is available as an option.
Can I start or end my charter in Dar es Salaam?
Yes, on request and for an additional fee. We have our own moorings next to Hotel Slipway in Dar es Salaam.
How long is a charter, and on which day does it start?
In high season (January–February and July–August), week charters run Saturday to Saturday, usually for one or two weeks. The rest of the year, dates and start days are flexible – tell us what suits you. Charters of two weeks or longer get a discount.
Do I have to return to the marina the night before check-out?
Either return to the marina, or spend your last night on our own mooring in Stone Town, opposite the promenade. It is about 30 minutes from the marina, and you sail back in the morning before 9 am.
Are marina nights included?
The first and the last night (in Azam Marina or at anchor in Stone Town) are included. Additional nights in the marina are charged separately.
What is the transit log, and what does it include?
The transit log is an obligatory fee per charter. It includes the final cleaning, bed linen and towels, a full water tank, a gas cylinder and the first and last night in Azam Marina or at anchor in Stone Town. Snorkelling sets are not part of the transit log: you can add professional Mares sets for EUR 10 per set.
Is fuel included?
On week charters, fuel is charged after the charter based on use, calculated from the engine and generator hours at current fuel prices. There is no self-service refuelling in Zanzibar; if you wish, you can be present when the yacht is refuelled. On cabin cruises and day trips, fuel is included.
How do we get fresh water during the week?
Every yacht has a working watermaker. Refilling water is not a problem either: in most places our deckhands can arrange it, which is often cheaper than the fuel needed to run the watermaker.
Can I choose my own route?
Yes, you decide where to sail. Your skipper or deckhand advises on tides, weather and safe anchorages, and he knows where anchoring is not allowed. If the weather turns bad, the skipper decides on the route for safety. Get inspired on Sailing in Zanzibar and our interactive map.
Where can we sail in a week?
Stone Town and the nearby islands, Mnemba, Nungwi and Kendwa in the north, Menai Bay in the south-west, the wild island of Pemba, and the mainland coast with Dar es Salaam and Saadani National Park. Mafia Island is a great choice for longer trips. See the sailing areas →
Are national park and marine park fees included?
No. Most of the sailing area is a protected park, but in practice fees are collected at only a few spots (usually 2–4 on a week). Your skipper or deckhand collects the required local fees, and if your route includes paid spots, you will know about it in advance.
How many guests can sail on a yacht?
On week charters, the law allows up to 12 people on board each of our yachts, including the crew. For comfort, we recommend up to 8 guests on the Lagoon 450 F, Helia 44 and Leopard 48, and up to 10 guests on the Leopard 46 (two per cabin).
Is there Wi-Fi on board?
On week charters you can add a Wi-Fi modem with a data package. On cabin cruises, Wi-Fi is included. On request, we can also arrange for a SIM card agent to meet you at check-in.
Which extras can I add to a week charter?
Skipper, cook or Full Board, airport transfers, early check-in or late check-out, a SUP board and fishing equipment (no separate deposit: if an item is lost, you pay the deposit amount stated in our offer for it, and damage is charged at repair cost), professional Mares snorkelling sets (EUR 10 per set), a Wi-Fi modem, an extra set of bedding and towels, a kids' safety net, a Mafia Island diving package and a safari. Prices are on each yacht page.
Security deposit & damage waiver
Is there a security deposit?
Yes. Every week charter has a refundable security deposit, which is returned after the charter if the yacht comes back without damage. The standard security deposit is EUR 6,000.
How do I pay the security deposit?
In cash at the base, secured by card, or by bank transfer at least 7 days before the charter.
Can I reduce the deposit?
Yes, with our Damage Waiver. For an additional EUR 400, the standard EUR 6,000 security deposit is reduced to EUR 600 for charters with our skipper, or to EUR 2,000 for bareboat charters with a local deckhand (without our skipper). The Damage Waiver limits your liability to the amount of the reduced deposit. It is not an insurance. You can also insure your deposit with an external insurer, for example Pantaenius.
Am I liable for damage when our skipper sails the yacht?
When you sail with our professional skipper, he is responsible for navigating and handling the yacht. The exact rules on liability are set out in our Charter Terms & Conditions.
Food, drinks & provisioning
How does provisioning work on a week charter?
You have three options: do your own shopping before the charter, hire a cook who cooks what you buy, or choose our Full Board option and we take care of everything.
What is Full Board?
All provisioning is handled by us, including during the cruise. Full Board includes 3 meals a day, snacks, fruit, water and soft drinks – basically everything except alcohol. Our chef creates the menu from your food preferences (one short questionnaire for the whole group, before the charter), and everything is ready on board at check-in.
I want to do my own shopping. Any tips?
Stock up before the charter. There are not many supermarkets in Zanzibar, they are not very well stocked and prices are quite high. Some things are bought at the local market, where prices are negotiated. During the charter you can buy fish and seafood from local fishermen, and your deckhand can help you find rice, fruit and vegetables. More "European" products may be impossible to find.
We plan to sail to Pemba. What should we know about food?
Provision before you leave. Pemba is wild: on land you can buy only from fishermen or a few individual fruits and vegetables.
Can the chef cater for vegetarians, allergies or special diets?
Yes. The food questionnaire covers your preferences, restrictions and allergies, and our chefs regularly cook vegetarian meals. On day trips, just tell us when you book.
Can I bring my own alcohol?
Yes, on week charters, cabin cruises and day trips you are welcome to bring your own. On cabin cruises you can also order beer, premium wines and spirits from our drinks list before the cruise.
What food is served on a day trip?
Every day trip includes a multi-course meal prepared by our chef, for example grilled king prawns, catch of the day, chermoula calamari, beef in coconut sauce or grilled chicken, with sides, salads and a fresh fruit platter. The chef adapts the menu daily to the freshest ingredients.
Our yachts & life on board
Which yachts do you have?
Four catamarans: the Leopard 46 “Blue Moon” (new in 2026, 5 cabins), the Leopard 48 “Sunday Kinga”, the Lagoon 450 F “Butterfly” and the Helia 44 “Knyps”. The three older yachts were refitted in 2025 and 2026.
Why a catamaran?
Catamarans are spacious and stable, which makes them perfect for shallow lagoons, sandbanks and family sailing.
Is there air conditioning and electricity on board?
Yes. Every yacht has air conditioning, a generator and a working watermaker.
Do the cabins have their own bathrooms?
Yes, the double cabins have their own bathroom with a toilet and shower. See each yacht page for the exact layout.
What equipment is on board?
A dinghy with an outboard engine, a fully equipped galley and a full set of safety equipment. Professional Mares snorkelling sets, a SUP board and fishing equipment are available as extras. Details are on each yacht page.
Can I see photos and the layout before I book?
Yes. Each yacht page shows photos, the technical data and the layout. Ask us for more up-to-date photos of your yacht.
Safety
Is sailing in Zanzibar safe?
Yes, with local knowledge. That is why every yacht sails with one of our deckhands, who knows the reefs, tides and safe anchorages. Each yacht carries navigation systems, life rafts, life vests and rings, emergency lights and fire-fighting equipment, and you get a safety briefing before departure. Our yachts and captains are insured.
What happens if something breaks during my charter?
We have three technicians on site, 24/7 technical service and the best-equipped marine parts warehouse in Zanzibar. If something needs fixing, we fix it fast, so your holiday goes on.
What if the weather changes?
Your skipper or deckhand knows the local conditions and advises you on the best plan for the day, and you choose. If the weather is bad, we decide: the skipper may change the route, delay departure or stay at anchor for safety. On day trips, some pick-up points may be unavailable in bad weather, and in some places guests transfer to the yacht by a local fibre boat.
Are there life jackets for children?
Yes. We have life jackets for small children too. They are for safety and emergencies, not swimming aids, so please bring your own arm bands or swim vest if your children need them. A kids' safety net is available on request. There is no minimum age: whether to bring little ones on board is the parents' decision and responsibility.
Weather & seasons
When can I sail in Zanzibar?
All year round. Zanzibar lies just south of the equator, with warm water and sailing in every month. In short: you can choose the season that matches your needs and budget, because rates also vary by season.
What is the weather like month by month?
January–March: southern summer, hot and sunny, around 31–33°C, and popular while it is winter in Europe. April–May: the long rains, around 15 rainy days a month, and the lowest rates of the year. June–October: southern winter, rain is rare and it is around 28°C, with competitive rates. October–December: a transition season around 30°C; November is the “small rainy season”. Christmas & New Year: the most sought-after weeks of the year, so book well in advance.
Does it rain all day in the rainy season?
Not usually. It is a bit of a lottery: some guests who sailed in April–May at very attractive rates had six sunny days and only one rainy one. It is just not possible to predict which days will be rainy.
How do the tides affect sailing?
The tides in Zanzibar are high. Many sandbanks appear only at low tide. Your deckhand or skipper knows the tides very well and plans the day around them.
Travel to Zanzibar
How do I get to Zanzibar?
Fly to Zanzibar airport (ZNZ). Good connections include Ethiopian Airlines, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Air France, Condor, Kenya Airways, RwandAir and Oman Air.
How far is the marina from the airport? Do you arrange transfers?
Azam Marina is about 10 km (around 25 minutes) from the airport. We arrange airport and hotel transfers on request; they are not included in the charter price.
Do I need a visa?
Most visitors need a visa for Tanzania, which also covers Zanzibar. Apply online only via the official Tanzania eVisa portal.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Foreign visitors must buy the government's mandatory inbound travel insurance – if Zanzibar is your first point of entry, via Visit Zanzibar. Travel insurance is not included in our prices, and we also recommend trip cancellation insurance.
What time zone is Zanzibar in?
East Africa Time (EAT), UTC+3, with no daylight saving time.
What is the local currency?
The Tanzanian shilling (TZS).
Do I need vaccinations?
Please ask your doctor or a travel clinic about vaccinations and malaria prevention well before you travel.
What should I pack?
Pack light – space on board is limited and you will live in swimwear most of the day.
Bags: soft, foldable bags instead of hard suitcases (they are hard to stow in the cabin), plus a small waterproof bag for dinghy rides and beach trips.
Clothes: swimwear (two sets, so one is always dry), light shorts and T-shirts, a light long-sleeved shirt or rash vest against the sun, a thin jacket or sweater for breezy evenings, and one outfit that covers shoulders and knees for Stone Town and village visits.
Shoes: flip-flops or deck shoes with light, non-marking soles, and water shoes for reefs and rocky beaches – on board most guests go barefoot.
Sun & health: reef-safe sunscreen, a hat or cap, sunglasses, after-sun, insect repellent, seasickness tablets if you need them and your personal medicines (the yacht has a first-aid kit).
Tech: a power bank, charging cables, a plug adapter (Tanzania mostly uses UK-type three-pin sockets) and a waterproof phone pouch.
Documents: passport and visa, travel insurance details and, for a bareboat charter, your sailing licence and VHF radio certificate (SRC/LRC).
Bed linen and towels are on board; snorkelling sets are included on cabin cruises and can be added as an extra on week charters.

Safari, diving & excursions
Can I combine a yacht charter with a safari?
Yes – Zanzibar is the only yachting destination in the world where you can combine a yacht charter with a safari. Sail across the channel to Saadani National Park, about 25 nautical miles from Azam Marina, anchor off the beach and explore the park with a local guide. Charter + safari →
Which national parks can I visit?
With our safari partners on the mainland, you can add a safari in any of Tanzania's national parks, including the famous Serengeti, before or after your cruise. Safari and park fees are not included in the charter price; we arrange everything on request.
Do I need a guide in Saadani?
Yes, a guided tour is required in the park. We arrange the guide for you.
Can I go diving?
Yes. We work with trusted local dive centres, and diving licences are generally accepted – certified divers can get better packages. Mafia Island is one of the world's great diving spots, with whale sharks, and we offer a Mafia Island diving package – ask us for details. Snorkelling is possible almost everywhere we sail.
Will we see dolphins and whales?
Dolphins are often seen around Mnemba and near Kizimkazi in Menai Bay, and dolphins and whales can be seen on the way to Pemba. They are wild animals, so sightings are never guaranteed.
Can you organise excursions on land?
Yes. We organise all the excursions available on Zanzibar together with our network of trusted guides, who speak various languages. Popular ideas are Stone Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Prison Island with its giant tortoises, the spice farms and Ngezi Forest on Pemba.
Day trips
Which day trips do you offer?
Prison Island & Nakupenda sandbank, Mnemba Island, Menai Bay (Blue Safari) and Mbudya Island off Dar es Salaam, plus sunset cruises. We are always happy to customise the trip. See all day trips →
How long is a day trip?
Choose a sunset cruise (about 3 hours), a half day (about 6 hours) or a full day (about 9 hours).
Is a day trip private?
Yes. A day trip is your private charter of a whole catamaran for your group: no crowds, your timing and your route.
How many people can join?
Up to 22 guests on the Lagoon 450 F, Helia 44 and Leopard 48, and up to 12 on the Leopard 46.
Where can you pick us up?
Azam Marina, Stone Town (Forodhani), Kendwa Beach, Muyuni Beach, Fumba (Fumba Town), Kizimkazi, and Hotel Slipway in Dar es Salaam. Some pick-up points may be unavailable due to weather, and in some places guests transfer by a local fibre boat.
What is included in a day trip?

Not included: crew gratuities, marine park fees, island entrance tickets (for example Prison Island, Mnemba or Mbudya, paid during the trip), land transport to and from the pick-up point, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks, and excursions outside the programme.
Which extras can I add to a day trip?
Snorkelling sets (USD 5 per set), extra beach towels, a deep-sea fishing rod, SUP, wing foil, a DJ on board, a private photographer, special boat decoration, a birthday cake or a special sandbank dinner set-up. See Day trips for details.

Cabin cruises
What is a cabin cruise?
A week on a crewed catamaran without chartering the whole yacht: you book a private cabin and share the yacht, the crew and the meals with the other cabin guests. See cabin cruises →
Where do cabin cruises go?
The Pemba Route (8 days / 7 nights) sails from Zanzibar's west coast to Pemba's uninhabited islands and back via Mnemba and Stone Town. Over Christmas and New Year we sail a longer route along the south of Zanzibar to Mafia Island.
